Dr. Hayes received his Sc.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from M.I.T. in 1981 and then joined the faculty in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Tech. From 2006 until 2011, he was an Assocaite Chair for the School of ECE and Associate Director of Georgia Tech Savannah. Dr. Hayes is currently a Professor Emeritus at Georgia Tech and a Distinguished Foreign Professor at Chung-Ang University in Seoul, Korea..
Dr. Hayes has become internationally recognized for his contributions to the field of digital signal processing. He has published almost 200 articles in journals and conference proceedings, and is the author of two textbooks, Statistical Digital Signal Processing and Modeling (Wiley, 1996), and Schaum’s Outline on Digital Signal Processing (McGraw-Hill, 1999). His research interests include DSP algorithms, signal modeling, image and video coding, stereo image processing, face recognition, multimedia signal processing, and DSP education. His current projects include face recognition for personalization, lane tracking for driver awareness, hand and gesture recognition for multimedia applications, and equation recognition for handheld devices and the classroom..
Dr. Hayes has received a number of awards for his research, including the Senior Award from the IEEE Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing Society in 1983, the Presidential Young Investigator Award in 1984. In 1992, he was elected to the grade of IEEE Fellow "For contributions to signal restoration including the development of algorithms for signal restoration from Fourier transform phase or magnitude." For his innovative research in education and educational technoloies, Dr. Hayes received the Georgia Institute of Technology Excellence in Continuing Education Award in 2002.
Dr. Hayes has been very active in professional service having served as member and Chairman, Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactiona on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing (ASSP), Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Education, Secretary-Treasurer of the Publications Board of the IEEE Transaction on ASSP, Member of the IEEE Signal Processing Administrative Committee, Chairman of the ASSP Publications Board, General Chairman of the 1996 International Conference of Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing (Atlanta, Georgia), and General Chair of the 2006 International Conference on Image Processing (Atlanta, Georgia).
Dr. Hayes participated in the ASEE-NASA summer faculty fellowship program from 2002-2004 where he worked on signal processing algorithms for an imaging infrared Fourier transform spectrometer. He spent three years teaching and doing research at Georgia Tech Lorraine (Metz, France). In addition, he has taught courses and performed research at the following universities: Shanghai Jiao Tong University (Shanghai, China), Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (Madrid, Spain), and Seoul National University, Korea University, and Chung-Ang University (all three in Seoul, Korea).
Dr. Hayes has developed and delivered numerous professional education courses, has served as a consultant to industy, and has worked with law firms as an expert witness in patent litigation cases.
